"I can now speak confidently about governance issues and feel equipped to take on the Chair role of our board. The ability to be flexible and complete the work on my own time was a necessity."
Tell us about your professional experience before discovering the Corporate Governance Institute.*
I am a retired physician and medical educator who returned to school to complete an MBA, from which I graduated over a year ago. I co-founded a healthcare start-up in 2022.
What challenges or opportunities were you facing in your career or on your board before taking our course?
I wasn’t entirely sure of my pathway post-MBA and brought a number of skills to my new career as a start-up founder but I had obvious and glaring holes in my knowledge. I also thought my skill set would be useful in a board setting but wasn’t sure where to start.
Why did you choose to study for the Diploma in Corporate Governance with us to help with these challenges/opportunities?
I thought the diploma would be a good foundation both as a potential board member and as a company co-founder.
Can you describe any particular elements of the course that stood out to you or made a significant impact?
Understanding the roles and responsibilities of the board, particularly the need for diverse yet complimentary backgrounds and skills was a key takeaway.
How has completing this course influenced your career, leadership approach, or governance or ESG skills?
I can now speak confidently about governance issues and feel equipped to take on the Chair role of our very small but hopefully growing board.
What did you find most beneficial about studying with the Corporate Governance Institute?
The ability to be flexible and complete the work on my own time was a necessity.
